Description (Service) | * Professional Standards independently investigates complaints by the public about the conduct of a police officer employed by the Windsor Police Service * Investigates complaints about the policies or services provided by the Windsor Police Service * Complaints must be filed within 6 months of the incident * Professional Standards also investigates complaints filed through the Ontario Civilian Commission on Police Services * A complainant can go into a police station and simply have a conversation to clear up a question or complaint * Local resolution allows the police to solve, explain, clear up or settle a matter considered to be "less serious" directly with the complainant * If the compliantant does not get a resolution they can file a complaint with the "Office of the Independent Police Review Director"(OIPRD) Public Complaint Process through OIPRD * To view the complaint process Click Here Ontario Civilian Police Commission(OCPC) * Independent quasi-judicial civilian tribunal * functions separately from police * conducts hearings regarding appeals of police disciplinary penalties * conducts investigations and inquiries into the conduct of chiefs of police, police officers and members of police services boards * conducts reviews of local decisions relating to public complaints at the request of complainants If assistance is needed when filling out the complaint form: * Many local community organizations may offer assistance with the complaint and often provide translation services (call 211 for details) * a lawyer is not needed to file a complaint, but a lawyer or legal clinic may provide advice and assistance with the complaint |
